Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

The Science Behind Foraging & Common Edible Wild Foods and Forgeable Plants in Colorado

There is a luscious, wild pantry, stocked to the gills with the freshest, healthiest foods imaginable, across the hills and riverbanks of Colorado. Join Walking Mountain Science Center to investigate common, edible wild foods and forgeable plants in this wild, culinary adventure. Wild foods grow everywhere: the cracks in the sidewalk, your backyard garden and of course in the wildernesses across the world. Humans have been foraging the earth for all of time. In the Science Behind Foraging, we will learn foraging skills, search for wild edibles, and you might just find that you were born to do it!

Guest presenter Liz Morgan is the founder of the Backyard Agrarian website through which she practices and promotes healthier living that’s good for us and good for the planet. She is a freelance writer and editor on issues of health, food, yoga and sustainability. Liz is the author of the 2013 Falcon Guidebook, Foraging the Rocky Mountains. The guidebook encourages environmental awareness and sustainability while providing detailed plant descriptions, gorgeous color photos, recipes and thoughtful factoids. It is accessible for beginners and enlightening for seasoned professionals.

The Science Behind series of classes highlights useful and fun skills that have underlying scientific principles. Each class provides a hands-on, interactive component with instruction from a local subject matter expert and a Walking Mountains educator.
