Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in September, 2013 **

The Science Behind Papermaking and How Water Acts as a Binding Agent to Create a Molecular Bond

Join artist Helen Hiebert for a look at the Science Behind Papermaking!  Hiebert, a recent transplant to the Vail Valley, will introduce us to this ancient craft that is rooted in science (in the papermaking process, water acts as a binding agent between the fibers by forming molecular bridge; when the water evaporates, the fibers are bound together by a molecular glue known as the hydrogen bond). She will also show examples of handmade paper as a diverse art form, and you’ll get to make a unique sheet of paper that can be sculpted when it dries. Come watch Hiebert’s film, Water Paper Time, listen to stories about papermaking around the world, and get your hands wet making paper!

Helen Hiebert constructs installations, sculptures, films, artist books and works in paper using handmade paper as her primary medium. She teaches, lectures and exhibits her work internationally, and she is the author of the books Playing With Paper, Papermaking with Plants, The Papermaker's Companion, and Paper Illuminated. Her next book, Playing With Pop-Ups will be published in April 2014. She is the vice president of the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists and a regular contributor to Hand Papermaking Newsletter.

Helen will have copies of her books and films available for purchase.

Seating is limited, please call (970) 827-9725 to register!
