Walking Mountains Science Center Announces Snowshoe Series with Icebreaker

Written by Walking Mountains Science Center | Jan 2, 2018 8:23:15 AM

During the first 6 weeks of 2018, locals and visitors alike are invited to join naturalists from Walking Mountains Science Center and brand ambassadors from Icebreaker on unique snowshoeing excursions in the White River National Forest. The four-part snowshoe series will consist of outings led by Walking Mountains’ naturalists and World Champion Athlete Josiah Middaugh, base-layer demos of Icebreaker products, and an after-dark snowshoe tour of our local trails.

“This is a natural partnership for our snowshoeing programs,” said Peter Suneson, community outreach coordinator, Walking Mountains Science Center. “Icebreaker is known for its commitment to adaptation, symbiosis, and sustainability, three topics that fit well with Walking Mountains’ mission to awaken a sense of wonder and inspire environmental stewardship and sustainability through natural science education.”

Naturalists will be on hand at the Icebreaker Touchlab store in the Solaris Plaza before the outings on January 6th, 15th, 20th and February 9th to discuss local wildlife adaptations to the frigid winter cold. From ermine to lynx, educators will be on hand to discuss how animals tolerate and adapt to the cold and will share their tips and tricks for wintertime tracking and scat identification. Participants will be able to demo Icebreaker base layers out on the snow shoe hikes and learn about the Merino sheep in the Southern Alps of New Zealand whose adaptations to the extreme climate variances create the super soft and warm Icebreaker merino wool.

“We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Walking Mountains Science Center for this snowshoeing series – to help educate on the sustainability of our environment, something Icebreaker is transparent about and proud of. And also, to allow others the opportunity to trial our base layers outside in nature and understand the benefits of natural performance.” Lisa Lethbridge NA marketing coordinator

Once out on the trail, stories of toleration, migration, and adaptation will supplement the Icebreaker demo days as participants hit the trail with Walking Mountains naturalists in search of signs of local wildlife staying warm this winter. The snowshoe on January 20th will have a special guest host, World Champion Xterra Champion Josiah Middaugh. Participants will enjoy a snowshoe with Josiah and learn his tips and tricks for wintertime training and staying warm.

About Icebreaker

Icebreaker was and still is a merino pioneer. In 1994 we were the first to see the huge potential of this incredible natural material that was not only capable of out-performing synthetics and plastics, but was an infinitely better choice for the well-being of our planet. The purity of our relationship with nature and our partners is still what differentiates Icebreaker as the original and most authentic merino brand.
