Edwards Metro District Partnership Offers Discounted Energy Assessments and Increased Rebates for Residents and Businesses

Edwards Metro District and Walking Mountains Science Center have joined forces to help reach the local Climate Action Plan goal of a 50% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Both businesses and homeowners will benefit from the new partnership through a variety of ways, including: $50 on-site energy assessments for homeowners and increased rebates for homeowners and businesses for energy efficiency, safety, weatherization, and electrification improvements. Participants will have access to a database of vetted local contractors who can help complete the upgrades. All residents and businesses in Edwards Metro District are encouraged to join the efforts.

“We are excited to offer incentives for residents and businesses to reduce our collective carbon footprint through a variety of rebates,” said Beth Reilly, Board President of the Edwards Metro District. 

Edwards Metro District energy rebates will cover up to 60% of project costs when combined with utility rebates, including:

• Weatherization, energy efficiency, and safety upgrades: insulation and air sealing, crawl space conditioning, door and window weather stripping, LED lighting, heat pump water heaters, programmable thermostats, radon mitigation, and solar PV installations. Rebate amounts are up to $1,000 per year for residents and up to $2,000 per year for businesses.
• Electrification and battery storage projects: moving natural gas or propane appliances to electricity, adding energy storage via grid-tied batteries, and electrical panel upgrades to accommodate future projects. Rebate amounts are up to $3,500/year for residents and up to $6,500/year for businesses.

“The Edwards Metro District is committed to mitigating the effects of climate change,” said Reilly. “We encourage residents and business owners to share their creative ideas to do more and take action on climate change issues affecting our community.”

Building and commercial energy use account for 60% of the county’s greenhouse gas emissions with most of these emissions coming from electricity consumption. The Edwards Metro District partnership with Walking Mountains will provide an opportunity for residents to take easy steps to participate in the county’s climate action plan reduction goals, and to put money back in their pockets. 

To date, through Walking Mountains’ Energy Programs, more than 2,005 Eagle County homes have received a home energy assessment with participating homes completing over 958 energy improvements. Additionally, more than 396 energy improvements have been completed by local businesses. When combined, the program has reduced over 11,970 metric tons of carbon emissions (annually) and the average participant has been able to reduce energy use by about 20%.
