Did you know that Aspen trees are the largest living organism on earth? The Pando aspen stand in central Utah, which spreads across more than 106 acres and weighs close to 13 million pounds, is considered by many to be the largest single organism on earth. Through a reproduction process called cloning, the more than 40,000 individual aspen trees that make up the Pando stand share a single root system and are all genetically identical. Fall leaf looking is a popular activity right now in the high country as the aspen leaves are changing into beautiful shades of yellow, orange, and red. Here are some ways you can enjoy the leaves while staying green (Source: USDA)
1.) Walk: What better way to experience the changing colors of fall than a walk through the woods. Not only will you get an upfront and close view of the colorful leaves, but a little fresh air, exercise, and reduced vehicle emissions never hurt. Some of our staff’s favorite fall leaf looking trails include East Lake Creek trail in Edwards and Cross Creek trail just south of Minturn.
2.) Leave No Trace: Whether you walk or drive, be mindful not to leave anything behind. No one wants to see trash while taking in the fall colors.
3.) Be efficient: If you do plan on driving to see some fall colors, plan your route ahead of time or consider combining it with other trips or errands to maximize your efficiency and minimize vehicle emissions.
