The Science Behind Skiing, Group Think, Snow Dynamics and Skiing Technology
For many of us, living in the Eagle Valley was a strategic move to be closer to the thing we love, snow sports. Every winter day is an opportunity to get out there and enjoy the adrenaline rush of rapidly sliding on accumulated flakes of frozen crystalline water. Whether we use the resort lifts to lap our favorite runs or prefer to earn our turns through backcountry access, we are employing physics to convert gravitational potential energy into kinetic energy of motion. Understanding the scientific theory behind skiing can help make sense of the mechanics involved, which is useful for beginners and life-timers alike.
When it comes to winter recreation in the backcountry, most people travel in groups. Within each group the members have specific roles as well as relationships with one another that can influence the behavior of individuals and the group as a whole. With a clearer understanding of social psychology like conformity, leadership styles, social facilitation, and the efficiency of different decision-making processes, groups are more likely to safely and successfully attain their goal of an epic ski expedition.
Enter local extreme skier Chris Anthony with over 26 years of experience with the legendary action sports production company Warren Miller Entertainment. In partnership with Walking Mountains Science Center, Chris will present on the Science Behind Skiing on Wednesday, December 2nd at 6:30pm. He will delve into Group Think, snow dynamics, and how technology changes affect our perception of the backcountry. Over his career, Chris Anthony has been in a number of challenging situations where a poor decision, ego or simple break down of communication in a group has meant the difference between success and failure. Through engaging and entertaining anecdotes, experiences and expertise, Chris will breakdown the social and scientific aspects of skiing and how they apply to winter enthusiasts everywhere.
Chris Anthony is a Colorado native and longtime Vail resident. For a good portion of his life Chris competed at an international level and still travels as an athlete and on-screen personality with the Warren Miller Entertainment. His feats are displayed in the annual Warren Miller feature film, as well as numerous television programs and documentaries.
On snow since the age of one, Chris broke away from skiing long enough to reach the international ranks of the cycling world, receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colorado and study for a period of time at USC film school.
For the past 26 years, Chris Anthony has traveled as a member of the Warren Miller Film Team, freelanced for several publications, co-authored a guide book, been commissioned to write a screenplay, hosted and produced television programming, started a consulting and guide
business, and given substantial time to a variety of charities. In 1991 Chris was named a Youth Ambassador for the State of Colorado.
