Soaring above tree line and lining alpine ridges are the beautiful purple blooms of the Sky Pilot, Polemonium viscosum. You may smell it before you see it and the skunky funk is the reason this flower is also known as skunkweed. Regularly confused with the scent markings of marmot’s and other alpine rodents, the smell is designed to attract insects that help pollinate other Sky Pilot flowers.
While sprawling alpine views take the cake for timberline hikes, there is still lots to know about the flora and fauna closer to your feet. Our guide will take you to new heights, but also keep you grounded! Click here to see a detailed schedule of where you can adventure this summer!
