Sustainability Tips: When Recycling Plastics Not All Numbers are Created Equal

Did you know that the number inside the recycling symbol is actually used to identify the type of material? It doesn’t ensure the items are recyclable, but rather lets you know the type of plastic you are purchasing. 

Helpful Plastic Recycling Tips:
  • Aim to buy plastics #1-2 to ensure the highest level of recyclability.
  • Think about purchasing a reusable water bottle, coffee cup, or metal straw.
  • Bring your reusable water bottle, coffee cup or metal straw with you when you go to the local coffee shop or your favorite local eatery. You don't have to use their cups and they will happily fill your cup or water bottle instead!
