Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!

** This Science Behind event took place in December, 2013 **

The Science Behind Women's Ski Equipment & Ski Gear

Join Walking Mountains Science Center for The Science Behind Women’s Ski Equipment on December 4th, 2013 at 6:30pm. Guest speaker, Jeannie Thoren, has spent her career researching and helping women ski better.   During this program Jeannie will share her popular presentation and explain its driving philosophy “Women are not small men.” She will discuss differences in male and female skeletal structure and how these differences influence one’s ability to make a ski perform properly. Jeannie will also discuss the evolution of women-specific ski equipment and the science behind the need for gender-specific equipment. Many women experience problems with their equipment that their male counterparts don’t.

The most common skiing problems for women are:The Science Behind Women's Ski Equipment

  • Sitting back
  • Ski tips wander or cross
  • Heels lifting in the boots
  • Too much foot movement in the boots
  • Cold feet and/or cramping
  • Fatiguing easily
  • Skiing “knock-kneed”

Jeannie Thoren owns and operates Jeannie Thoren Women’s Ski Center in Vail with her husband. Ski magazine said this about Jeannie: “Jeannie Thoren spent the last 30 years researching the way women ski.  The Thoren Theory evolved as a way to help women skiers radically improve their technique through equipment modification….along the way she found herself revolutionizing the thinking of an entire industry.”  Jeannie has also been recognized for her work by Skiing Magazine, North American Snowsport Journalists Association, and the Skiing for Women Hall of Fame.
