The Science & History Behind Home Brewing
Join Walking Mountains Science Center for the Science Behind Home Brewing on Wednesday, September 17, 2014 at 6:30 PM to learn how to get started in home brewing and the basic science of beer.
Home brewing was once a common household task in American homes, but went underground with Prohibition. Despite the repeal of Prohibition in 1933, home brewing remained illegal in most of the United States until 1979. With the resurgence of the do-it-yourself movement in the past few years, home brewing is now much more common, with about a million Americans brewing their own beer at least once a year. This has increased experimentation and innovation in beer, along with the enormous growth of craft breweries.
The Science Behind Home Brewing, guest presented by Beth Reed of Wine or Wort Home Brew Supply in Gypsum, will introduce you to the art of home brewing. Even if it doesn’t become your new hobby, it will give you an understanding of how beer is made. During this hands-on program, participants will create a class wort (what beer is called before fermentation), learn about the human and animal history of alcoholic beverages, and try locally made home brew.
Space and materials are limited, participants must RSVP to Walking Mountains at (970) 827-9725.
