Have you ever wondered how something works or how something was made? In the monthly Science Behind series, we partner with a guest presenter to explore a large variety of interesting topics. The Science Behind series offers opportunities for adults to apply new knowledge and skills to everyday life, while having fun!
** This Science Behind event took place in October, 2014 **
The Science Behind Sugar, Sucrose, Lactose, Maltose, Dextrin and other sugars!
Sucrose, lactose, maltose, dextrin, invert sugar, mono-and diglycerides, maltodextrin, glucose, and galactose… these are only a few of the words commonly seen on ingredients labels these days that really mean sugar. However, not all sugar is the same, and different types affect bodies differently.
Come to the next Science Behind on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at 6:30PM to learn about how sugar affects our health and its relation to breast cancer. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Walking Mountains is hosting this special Science Behind with emphasis on the Breast Cancer Prevention Diet. Guest presenter Kristina Sampson, author of “Leave Cancer in the Dust: 50 Tips to Prevent Breast Cancer and Supercharge your Health” and the popular “The Vail Diet” website, will be discussing the hidden sugar in everyday foods and its link to cancer and other health problems. An important topic for men and women alike, she will also discuss foods we should be sure to eat plenty of in order to help lead healthy, happy lives.
Kristina Sampson is a health coach who follows a holistic approach to health, while advocating balance and moderation. Originally a CPA, Kristina began studying nutrition after being diagnosed with a rare form of breast cancer in 2007. With the analytical mind of a CPA, a sharp understanding of science, a voracious thirst for nutrition knowledge, and the experience of applying that knowledge to her own life-or-death health issues, Kristina is passionate about helping people navigate today’s confusing food landscape.
Participants in the Science Behind Sugar will get a chance to cook and eat several yummy, healthy snacks from the Breast Cancer Prevention Diet and take home products to help them prepare fruits and vegetables more easily. Come to Walking Mountains to learn how to supercharge your health!
